OMV-Petrom is a Romanian integrated oil company, the largest corporation in Romania and the largest oil and gas producer in Southeast Europe, with activities in the business segments of Upstream, Downstream Gas and Downstream Oil. OMV Petrom is the main crude oil producer in Romania and supplies around half of the internal gas production. For its sustainable development, OMV Petrom has expanded the gas value chain into power and operates the 860 MW gas fired power plant at Brazi and the Dorobantu 45 MW wind park.
OMV Petrom processes crude in the Petrobrazi refinery, near Ploiesti. OMV Petrom is present in the distribution market for oil products in Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria and Serbia through a network of approximately 780 filling stations, operated under two brands, Petrom and OMV.
Many methods are used for the exploration of an oil reservoir. The gravity anomalies and magnetic anomalies are the first method applied. A two dimensional seismic study is performed in order to locate accumulations of hydrocarbons. Finally, electromagnetic techniques are employed nowadays in order to identify the presence of potential hydrocarbons reservoir. Following the drilling processes and the installation of the well tubing and equipment, the oil will flow either naturally due to its own pressure or will be forced to flow after the injection of water or steam.
OMV-Petrom has installed and equipped many small parks with all the equipment required to do the oil processing steps. They may contain a small testing mechanism in order to determine the quantity of water in the oil, and therefore determine the required separation processes before delivery to the client. These small parks will be connected to the large park in order to transport the first phase of the separated oil. The large park is connected to a tank farm that consists of a final stage of a three phase separation of the oil, as well as tanks for storage and delivery of the oil.
Other main topic refers to the primary processes that consist of natural flow or artificial lift (SRP, PCP, LRP) and hydraulic lift. A basic and general overview of the four pumps seen at OMV Petrom is described as it follows. The types visited are the horsehead pump (SRP), the progressive cavity pump (PCP), the linear rod pump (LRP), and the hydraulic lift pump. The horsehead pump is principally the main type of pump used by OMV Petrom. Second comes the PCP and the LRP. Last but not least, the Lufkin hydraulic lift pump is used solely in one site in Asset VI Muntenia.
